@12 pm. \n \nSynopsis of The Behaviour of Hajj Crowd at Mina\nOnce a year\, Muslims of every ethnic group\, colour\, social level\, and culture gather from all over the world in Makkah to perform the Fifth Pillar of Islam\, the Hajj. Hajj is a sequence of rituals performed by 2-3 million people within specific times and places. Despite its huge cultural significance and the number of serious crowd accidents that have occurred there in the past\, very little social psychological research has been carried out on the Hajj. This talk is designed to highlight the importance of studying the behaviour of Hajj crowds as a means to increase the safety levels and facilitate effective management of the Hajj crowd at the holy site of Mina. This talk will start with a brief historical background of crowds’ disasters in Hajj. Then\, it will explore the current spatial-temporal characteristics and constraints of Mina. Next\, some research challenges will be discussed side by side with the main research aim and objectives of the speaker’s ongoing research. The talk will end-up by highlighting the need for advanced technologies and recommending some future work. This talk is recommended to attendance from any field. \nAbout the speaker:\nMr. Badr Alsolami is currently a PhD student at the Faculty of Built Environment at UTM and under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Mohamed Rashid Embi.\nBadr has ten years experience as an academic staff at Umm Al-Qura University (UQU) in Makkah\, Saudi Arabia. He holds a combined MS in Architecture & Urban design from Sydney University\, Australia. He works in Hajj since 1998 and participates in more than ten research projects in Makkah & Madinah with three major research centres in UQU: The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research\, Transportation and Crowd Management Center of Research Excellence\, and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology GIS Technology Innovation Center. This can be attributed to its environmentally friendly nature and long-term economic feasibility. In its early days—due to the very high cost\, PV is only used in high-end applications such as space and satellite systems. However\, with the continuous decline in the cost of modules\, PV is now being widely installed in residential homes. More recently\, Megawatt PV power plants have been connected to the electrical grid—signaling its entry into the commercial power generation sector. \nDespite these encouraging prospects\, there remain barriers that hinder the widespread penetration of this technology. Besides the relatively high capital cost (in Watt per Dollar)\, it faces uncertainties from the fluctuation of oil prices. Then\, there are resistances form the power generation companies and the social acceptance that need to be overcome. Even with the generous subsidized “feed-in-tariff”\, PV has still some way to go before it can pose a serious challenge to more established fossil-fuel based electricity. \nThis lecture will highlight the state-of-the-art of solar power technology and its integration into the grid. In addition\, the role of PV in the distributed power generation—which forms the backbone of the future smart grid systems\, shall also be discussed. Another important note is the pledges made by various governments (including Malaysia) to increase the share of green technology into their energy mix. This could well be the catalyst for a sustainable growth of PV throughout the world. Finally\, the talk will touch on the prospects of PV research in in Malaysia\, and highlights some of the work that has taken place in UTM.
