I S Jawahir is the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing (ISM) and James F. Hardymon Chair in Manufacturing Systems, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Kentucky, Lexington. Prior to joining University of Kentucky in July 1990, he was a Manager at Carbide Product Design, Carbology Inc. from September 1989 to June 1990, and Senior Lecturer at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Wollongong, Australia.
He is the recipient of the 2013 ASME Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal, and a Fellow of three major professional societies – CIRP since 1999, ASME since 2008, and SME since 2010. He is the technical editor of Journal of Machining Science and Technology, published by Taylor & Francis since 1998, and founding editor-in-chief, International Journal of Sustainable Manufacturing, published by Inderscience since 2008. He is the Founding Chairman of the ASME Research Committee on “Sustainable Products Processes from 2005-2011. Chairman of CIRP International Working Group on “Surface Integrity and Functional Performance of Component, and Founder of CIRP International conference series – modeling of machining operations. He has delivered more than 40 keynote papers in international conferences and over 150 invited presentations in 32 countries.
Prof Jawahir received his MS in Mechanical Engineering from P.F. University, Moscow, USSR in 1975 and PhD in Manufacturing Engineering from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 1986.
