Mohan’s BSc. Civil Engineering is from Sri Lanka and his M.Sc., Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees are from UK.
After his B.Sc., he worked on designs and construction and then as a Director of a Construction Project Management company in Sri Lanka. He also led consultancies funded by the World Bank and UNDP before joining academia. More recently, he served as a short-term Consultant to the World Bank, Colombo and now practises as an Adjudicator and Arbitrator.
He was at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for 21 years from 1992 and is now an Honorary Professor at HKU and also at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He now co-supervises PhD research in Hong Kong and Sri Lanka and assists in research and dissemination.
Mohan is active in professional institutions and industry link bodies. For example: he was the Sri Lanka rep. of the Chartered Institute of Building until 1992; Vice-Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Building Hong Kong Branch in 1996-97; Chairman of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Civil Division in 1997-98. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Innovation in Construction & Infrastructure Development, Hong Kong. Having served the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) Development Committee up to 1992, he is now on the IESL Accreditation Board.
He is also active in international research bodies and journal editorial boards. For example, he is one of three Joint Co-ordinators of the CIB Working Commission W122 on Public Private Partnership; Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Built Environment Project and Asset Management (BEPAM); and Editor-in-Chief, World Scientific Book Series on Domain-Specific Bodies of Knowledge in Project Management.
He has led many research projects and published over 380 peer reviewed international journal and conference papers on themes that include project procurement, contract administration, claims and dispute minimisation, technology exchange, built asset management and construction industry development.
